Message from the Director

Good afternoon, fellow NOAA Corps officers,

I am excited to announce, in conjunction with Medical Affairs and the NJAC, the NOAA Corps' Pregnancy/Postpartum & New Parent Guide! This document was created by NOAA Corps Mothers to inform and empower newly expectant parents, to help them navigate different facets of pregnancy/postpartum, and becoming a new parent while being Active Duty NOAA Corps. This guide is the culmination of volunteer efforts generated by reading policies, memoranda, and personal experiences of our workforce. This document should not be used as official policy, but as a guide with the intent to clarify and simplify, not to replace official guidance.

The guide may now be accessed through the CPC website here.

BZ to a job well done by all those who helped in shaping this new guide!

Stay healthy,

BOTC 140 is finishing their 3rd week of training. They successfully finished Indoctrination week and began the Junior phase of the program. So far they’ve learned about basic seamanship and safety. This week they spent a day at the Rhode Island Fire Academy for basic firefighting field training. Friday they will be attending Survival Systems USA for egress training.

From the Assignments Desk: NMFS - Billet #2471- Junior Officer in Charge (JOIC), R/V Gloria Michelle

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) is looking for a highly motivated officer to serve aboard the 72’ R/V Gloria Michelle. The JOIC serves under the Officer in Charge (OIC) and will work toward succession as the OIC upon successful completion of the JOIC assignment.

R/V Gloria Michelle is a bottom trawl vessel that has been conducting the Gulf of Maine Shrimp Survey and the Massachusetts State Bottom Trawl Survey for over 30 consecutive years and is vital to the Northeast fisheries stock assessment. The OIC and JOIC are charged with the safe operation and compliance with NOAA Small Boat Program regulations. R/V Gloria Michelle is homeported in Woods Hole, MA, and typically makes port calls Maine, New Hampshire, and throughout Massachusetts, averaging 70 days at sea per year. The JOIC works closely with the OIC to manage the vessel budget, logistics, maintenance, and contract procurements for winter repairs and other large projects.

The JOIC can expect to gain experience navigating the vessel and running the fishing equipment. General marine engineering knowledge is recommended as the officer will be working with the OIC, sometimes with little to no supervision, to maintain the major engineering systems aboard (main engine, generators, electrical system, plumbing, etc.). This unique, highly operational billet also offers invaluable experience managing crew and deck operations.

The assignment is expected to be vacant in August 2023. Interested officers should update their preferences and contact the OIC, LT Alex Creed at alexander.creed@noaa.gov to learn more.

*Correction to the previous Cyberflash Announcement: Billet #0047 is with OMAO, not OAR.
